Kahvi#269: Casimirs Blake / Casimir Corona

This time around we welcome a new face to the fold - Casimirs Blake. Those of you familiar with MigloJE's ambient release 'Ayesteeyah' back at #174 may hear some similarities with this ambient extravaganza from Blake. With a slight difference - we get the lush pads, swirling textures but also the recurring melodies which could be more akin to the epic releases by Global Communication such as 76:14. The four tracks on offer in Casimir Corona define Blakes sound, long drawn out descriptive passages, a classic Kahvi audio treat!

n0theen netaudio radio - TFN - Competition

We’ve been alive for half a year! (In the age of channels advertised to death, podcasts, other canned broadcasts and megacorporations!) :)

We’re working. Smoothly or badly, more or less successfully, but we are. It’s a fact that we provide a way and an alternative for spreading free music 24 hours a day, a chance for us all to learn about the various (bigger and smaller) netlabels, artists and performers from around the world. And that’s just “more than notheen”.

Hopefully it has already become clear that this all isn’t really about us: it’s about the netaudio community and about all the creative people involved in it. Without them, we simply do not exist. Without them, we are nothing, so we do need their support and feedback. That way, “notheen” is impossible.

Having considered all this…

NOTHEEN NETAUDIO RADIO would like to invite everyone to make a single piece of music, a song for a compilation titled “thanks for notheen”, to show your support and sympathy for the radio.

  • There’s no genre restriction (though it would be great to get “listener friendly” songs, obviously.)
  • It’s important that we’re looking for unpublished material, songs maximum of 5minutes playing time.
  • Please send us a single direct link of a single 256 kbps mp3 file per artist (with precise metatags, and do list country/city and your homepage in the comment field, please), to one of the following addresses: mogwai@notheen.com, nicolas@notheen.com
  • You may submit your finished works by 20/07/2009. The compilation will become available as a free download, and it will definitely receive prime time every day in our radio.

We’re counting on you! Thank you!

[pc0509-01] Rene Munoz Cordova - la arquitectura sonica de Amacelin + Luyelval

pc0509-01 front cover The latest release of Chilean composer René Muñoz Córdova on the Petcord netlabel, "la arquitectura sónica de Amacelin & Luyelval", explores opposite approaches to music in two composotions that go by the name Amacelin and Luyelval.

The first one, stretching over eight movements, takes a basic set of chopped samples from flute, strings, piaono and guitar and reassembles those in different ways. Reminiscent of classic role models, this could be called variations on a timbre, with the main difference being the addition and integration of processed and digitally generated sound sources. Apart from that, René Muñoz Córdova makes frequent use of pauses, even going so far as fragmenting parts to contrast them with more gently flowing tones. Amacelin prominently features sharp contrasts, from soft to loud, gentle to harsh, calm to abrasive there are all palettes of stylistic means to portrait Amacelin.

Luyeval follows a different route, in that it shares more characteristics of an improvisation. Not developing a story, but more of a description of an unfamiliar scenery. A feeling of unrest and tension persists and finds no relief in the dialogue of two grainy, seemingly stochastic tone sequences. They follow a logic of an alien language, periodically give way to contrasting motives or listen to the hovering drone in the background, similar to the humming of a generator. Luyeval succeeds in describing a scenery without prior history, just a constantly pushing forward presence. Whilst a stochastic approach is apparent, it still is of a limited nature, as the overall arrangement is the result of human selection and interception. Thus Luyelval still shares characteristics of a musical work and demonstrates that the distribution of contrasts and pitches that define a composition are not dependent on tonality.

Words by Thierry Massard @ noCo...mment:

Try to catch a protean asteroid, try to classify a acceleration place out of the box!

For sure, that bypass is impalpable...a shimmering surprise coordinated by an alchemist without blinkers. The nines...not the exception that proves hypothetical rules, enthusiastic, enterprising, after 32 notable references, ZhangJW have decided to call together new incomers (except Syndrôm) to be sure to give new avenues of investigation and jump over the trap of the first compilation exercice.

The leap is as graceful and elegant, as the reception carries a multitude of impressions and plurial feelings, without forgetting to mention the humor of some of the guests for their peking host - Alternately, an inspired lethargic dub, a dark blue frantic nostalgia, an unfinished and masterly track, a hit from Moscow or Esa giving us a strange ritournelle as a possible closure, a decoy.

The nine directions of that "S" are multiplied, for sure, but dotted with authentic free electrons in autonomy - particles in emulsion, crystallized for a moment, before a new mad rush, but I digress. Then, what about other assumptions, the classicism of a few times spent through the hills which are becoming more surprising and lyrical, or maybe the quiet and solid dematerialization of soundscapes orchestrated by a Sorin Paun at his best, saved in extremis in a scenographic loop history, a mysterious next door, finally closed by an off voice, on a laconic "bacteria bacteria" previously demonstrated through orientalism by Materia Prima as a high definitive testimony on monitors.

Finally, is it still really necessary to specify that "the nines" is not a nice illustrated catalog...
